The experience

Opened in 1999, the museum is located on the island of Salina. The museum’s mission is to commemorate the transoceanic emigration of the Aeolians who, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, left the archipelago to head mainly towards Australia, Argentina and the United States. The museum was created on the initiative of the C.I.R.C.E. (International Research Center for Aeolian History and Culture), in collaboration with professors and researchers from the Department of International and Community Studies of the University of Messina and with Italian historians from the University of New York at Stony Brook. Thanks to the acquisition of documents, official acts, letters, photographs, films and objects, it has been possible to trace the characteristics of the experience of three generations of Aeolians.
