The Pettineo Root F est project is part of the Borghi dei Tesori Roots Fest project, an aggregate project of 33 Sicilian municipalities for the Year of Roots Tourism 2024.
At the same time, the Festival lights up the Municipality with activities related to its treasures, its traditions and its identity heritage with a strong involvement of the community: in particular, 4 identity treasures of the Municipality will be open with a guided/theatrical tour by young storytellers and the elderly.
The following will be open for the occasion: an ancient oil mill where the “rite” of oil production will be simulated, a typical product of excellence of the Municipality of Pettineo (Country of Secular Olive Trees), the convent of the Capuchin Friars, dating back to 1500, which houses the only remaining seedbed in Sicily, where the mummified skeletons of the Franciscan friars are preserved; the Domestic Museum, where the canvases made by the artists who participated in the 90s in the event “A Kilometer of Canvas” of the Fiumara d’Arte are preserved, with various contemporary art paintings; the church of the Madonna della Pietà, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of August, a feast venerated by emigrants in Argentina.
There will be 2 tastings of local food and wine products, one linked to the opening of the ancient oil mill with tasting of Pettineo oil, and another dedicated to the dried lemon of Pettineo (P.A.T).
There will be 2 experiences of visits to the artisan workshops, one related to the production of the granita in limone in seccagno di Pettineo, and the other related to the production of oil with modern techniques and visit to the centuries-old olive trees, as well as 2 special experiences to discover the traditions and resources of the territory: one related to the Feast of the Patron Saint of Pettineo, S. Oliva, which takes place on May 5 each year and which in 2024 celebrates its 400th anniversary, with the traditional and spectacular procession of the simulacrum, the Feast of Piety which takes place on the third Sunday of August.
The activities will see the participation of the Italian Institute Ferdinado Santi which will act as a bridge with our communities of emigrants abroad and will join a project to digitize the registry of the Municipality, in order to provide the visitor of the Roots with the opportunity to carry out genealogical research to trace his origins.
This second action will be carried out in collaboration with the network of Sicilian Museums of Emigration.
