Prizzi is a particularly evocative festival, probably of medieval origin, which is celebrated on Easter Sunday.
Death, wearing a yellow dress and a grin imprinted on his mask, along with the Devils, dressed in red and wearing a large mask, will spend their day harassing and imprisoning people. Death will choose from the audience the victims to be led to Hell; it will be the Devils who will accompany them to a house, where the victims, in order to redeem their souls, will have only one chance: to pay an obolus, a small monetary offering. Devils and Death will also do their utmost to prevent the traditional “Meeting” between Our Lady and the Risen Christ. With “Lu Ballu di li Diavoli,” they will succeed in preventing the meeting between Mary and the resurrected Jesus twice, but on the third attempt they will be driven away by the Angels. The bells will ring out and Our Lady will lose her mournful black mantle.
