Our history is marked by the phenomenon of migration and almost all families have been involved in it.
Since the early 900s, in fact, every family of Oliveri has seen at least one of their loved ones leave in search of fortune abroad.
This people has been lucky, sometimes successful.
He has created his own family and interests elsewhere.
But none of them has ever forgotten the place where they were born and raised.
Each of them is emotionally chained to this country.
He returns there every year, at different times, and there is no lack of occasion when he does not make his affection felt for this land, promoting its virtues among friends and acquaintances.
The nature, the position, the climate, make Oliveri a unique place, capable of enchanting anyone who visits it.
In this context, the “Week of the Emigrant” is inserted, capable of transforming itself into tourism and territorial promotion, intercepting a target of people who in many cases have had enormous economic success and have great financial possibilities that could invest in the territory, not only in terms of tourism.
All this is certainly favored by the deep emotional bond, capable of creating a privileged channel.
The collaboration with the neighboring municipality of Furnari will also allow us to expand the offer to our emigrants and vice versa.
It will be a week with initiatives dedicated to Sicilian migrants, in particular Oliveri.
The B&Bs, restaurants and bars, will create ad hoc menus based on products of our culinary tradition, prepared with ancient methods now in disuse, musical events, and the involvement of the “Peppe Marchese” village band, which will tour our streets arousing exciting memories.
A collection of testimonies, which will enrich our memory by strengthening the sense of belonging, will be made public on the occasion of the inauguration of the “statue of the emigrant”, created by a local artist in homage to our emigrant citizens.
The choice of the date is linked to the concomitance of the patronal feast of Santa Rita, a symbolic day for our emigrants, which celebrates a sort of reconciliation with Oliveri.
This bond dates back to the end of the war when, with the offerings of citizens and remittances from emigrants, following a vow, a statue of Santa Rita was given to the Parish of Oliveri.
This holiday represents for many Italian-Americans, an opportunity to spend the holidays, encouraging the visit of the places also by friends and relatives, who, in turn, come to discover the ancient bond with Oliveri.
