THE CALL OF THE ROOTS: Flavors, traditions and experiences in Mongiuffi Melia.

The realization of Experiential Gastronomy Workshops from 07 to 09 November will take place with the
collaboration of restaurateurs, professionals and traders in the sector resident or originally from the municipality
at a room made available by the municipality for the preparation and tasting of typical local products
(Cuzzole, macaroni made with underwire and seasoned with meat sauce, preparation of artisanal ricotta and
“cassatelle di ricotta” typical of Mongiuffi Melia, etc.), dedicated to the descendants of the municipality; Excursions to the
discovery of the places, visit of the ancient stone millstones still present in many houses. The workshops are
will take place between two important anniversaries constituting an integral part and continuity: 1) the Feast of San
Leonardo, Patron Saint of Mongiuffi, organized by the religious committee of the same name, which begins on 28
October with the characteristic Novena and the contextual production of CUDDURE (hard bread braided with
doughnut shape) prepared continuously for nine days in which the members of the community take part
and the descendants of the emigrants, November 01 is dedicated to the preparation of the artistic cuddure of the Saint
Patron. On November 5th procession from the old church to the mother church, with the musical band entitled
in San Leonardo and at the end of the evening Sagra della Cuzzola (leavened and fried bread). On 06 November feast
that begins at dawn with the officiation (typical songs, some of which date back to the fourteenth century and then transcribed
by the emigrants of America at the beginning of the twentieth century so as not to forget) with procession and distribution
cuddure to all participants; in the evening procession and at the end characteristic fireworks; 2) the
Festival of San Martino, in Melia from 09 to 11 November, festival of typical food and wine products of the
territory, now in its nineteenth edition, organized by the municipality with performances by folk groups, with
and tools typical of the Sicilian tradition.
The period affected by these events is just one of the many that animate the two inhabited centers during the year
of Melia and Mongiuffi that make up the municipality of Mongiuffi Melia, events, which although different, occur
sometimes in an almost specular form, becoming occasions of dynamism, celebration and moments of aggregation,
making the community attractive and warmly welcoming to visitors.

The municipality of Mongiuffi Melia can be reached coming from Messina and Catania by exiting at the Taormina motorway exit, then continue on the state road 114 towards Messina until the traffic light of Letojanni, turn at the intersection and take the Provincial Road 11 for about 8 km through the Postoleone tunnel carved entirely into the rock.
