Enriched the offer of the Fs Foundation with 51 connections that will reach the most beautiful places on the Island, traveling on restored vintage carriages. This year a trunk will be added that will be able to carry up to 50 bicycles each way. It starts on August 12 until December 10
From the Temples of Agrigento to the chocolate of Modica, from the Baroque of Ragusano to the pistachio of Bronte: the historic trains of the Fs Foundation are returning to Sicily with a well-structured program that from August to September will allow visitors to admire some of the most beautiful and fascinating places on the island. The initiative, supported and promoted by the Sicilian Region through the Department of Tourism, is carried out in collaboration with the FS Foundation. Connections and itineraries were illustrated a few days ago in the Mosaic Hall of the Messina Maritime Station by Elvira Amata, regional councillor for tourism; Luigi Cantamessa, director general of the Fd Foundation; and Sandro Pappalardo, board member of Eni-National Tourism Agency.
The Historic Trains in Sicily program includes 51 events on the island’s most beautiful and scenic railway lines and will kick off on Saturday, August 12 and conclude on Sunday, December 10. Itineraries to discover an area rich in historical and architectural beauty and unique flavors, imagined to connect some of the most important urban centers-Palermo, Syracuse, Agrigento, Messina, Caltanissetta, Trapani-with places that are custodians of breathtaking views, unique flavors and millennial history, such as Cefalù, Modica, Ragusa, Tusa, Porto Empedocle, Giarre, and Castelvetrano. Each historic train route is associated with tours and excursions by the Sicilian Region’s Department of Tourism, Sports and Entertainment.
Among the new features of this edition, alongside the Centoporte carriages of the 1930s and Corbellini, the Fs Foundation, at the explicit request of the regional council, has also introduced new types of historic rolling stock, in particular a baggage carriage capable of carrying up to 50 bicycles per route with the aim of encouraging intermodality between train and bike on the routes traveled by the vintage trainsets.Among the routes in the program are the Temples train, from Palermo or Caltanissetta to Porto Empedocle; the Chocolate train, from Caltanissetta to Modica; the Normans train, from Messina to Cefalù; the Oil and Magna Graecia train, from Palermo to Castelvetrano; and the Pistachio train, from Messina to Giarre.
“Also for 2023, the Sicilian Region,” stressed Councillor Elvira Amata, “is promoting historic trains, a well-established initiative that significantly combines the idea of reproposing vintage convoys with the objective of enhancing routes and itineraries on Sicily’s most beautiful and scenic railway lines. It is a concrete opportunity to strengthen, make compatible and mutually functional different segments of the tourism sector, from the slow to the sustainable and experiential, with the intention of proposing a tourist offer as integrated as possible.”
“This year,” said Fs Foundation General Director Luigi Cantamessa, “we have further enhanced the offer of historic trains on the Trinacria tracks. As many as 51 connections that will allow tourists and others to visit the most beautiful territories of the island, arriving there on board perfectly restored ancient cars.”
